A hospital has agreed to pay millions to the family of a boy who became disabled for life as the result of medical errors at birth. According to reports, the jury found that the hospital where the mother delivered was negligent during her labor and delivery. The jury awarded the family $18.27 million, and the mother agreed to settle the birth injury lawsuit for $17.5 million, which will compensate the boy for medical expenses and other losses.

In this instance, a mother arrived at a local hospital in order to deliver her son. The pregnancy was not high risk and had been without complication. She received Pitocin in order to induce labor, and the doctor left instructions with staff not to allow the contractions to exceed four per 10 minutes. However, the contractions continued for more than six hours, resulting in oxygen deprivation. Additonally, even though the doctor requested that the mother's epidural be discontinued because she was having trouble pushing, the hospital staff failed to do so. Ultimately, the child became lodged in the mother's brith canal. The baby was born with brain damage, and developed cerebral palsy.
The money will help pay for a life time of expenses.
