Patient Suicide & Medical Malpractice Lawsuits
Holding Doctors & Providers Accountable for Patient Suicide
We rely on medical professionals to care for the people we love. That’s because doctors, nurses, and other practitioners have obligations to meet an accepted standard of care when treating patients. This can include recognizing and addressing any warning signs that may indicate a patient is at risk of suicide.
If your loved one committed suicide while under the care or supervision of a medical professional, investigating what happened and whether a medical or mental health care provider’s negligence may have been involved can be your first step toward accountability.
Bostwick & Peterson, LLP is an award-winning firm that’s recognized nationally for our work representing victims of medical malpractice. We’ve won over $1 billion for clients and:
- Hold the record for the largest medical malpractice recovery in CA history.
- Are led by a Certified Medical Malpractice Specialist (Attorney James Bostwick).
- Are listed in the U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” list.

Liability for Patient Suicide
Failing to recognize warning signs or issues that indicate a patient is a danger to themselves could implicate a treating provider in civil claims if they failed to meet the accepted standard of care.
Medication errors and negligent prescribing may also provide cause for action in patient suicide claims. It is the duty of a doctor to know the risks associated with drugs they prescribe, whether medications are contraindicated (meaning that they shouldn’t be used together because they pose health risks), and how patients are reacting to medications. Certain anti-depressants, such as SSRIs, can actually have the opposite of their intended effect, especially on younger patients.
Over 60 Years of Experience on Your Side
Suicide malpractice cases can be hard to prove, but our experienced attorneys at Bostwick & Peterson have the insight and resources to take on even the toughest claims.
With decades of combined experience, we’ve helped clients recover more than $1 billion in verdicts and settlements – many of which were secured against negligent hospitals, doctors, and other health care providers. Though no amount of money can compensate a family for the pain of losing a loved one, it can provide the justice and financial recovery they deserve.
